Theater 2016: Singin’ In The Rain Musical

This is a sponsored post brought to you by Nuffnang and Singin In The Rain

Last Friday, I got to see the splash-hit West End stage production “Singin’ in the Rain” at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. It is strictly for a limited season since they will be touring in Australia. After Sydney, they will be at the QPAC’s Lyric Theatre in Brisbane, then from December at Adelaide Festival Theatre and Crown Theatre Perth.

This production is not to be missed as it has garnered 3 Helpmann Award nominations, namely:

  1. Best Make Supporting Role in a Musical for Jack Chambers
  2. Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Erika Heynatz
  3. Best Choreography in a Musical

Having those nominations, who wouldn’t want to see and witness it for yourself?

I didn’t know what to expect when I got tickets for this show. All I know is that the song “Singin’ in the Rain” is a classic! And the play stars Adam Garcia!!! Ohh I’m so looking forward seeing him sing and dance live in front of my eyes.

It was raining last Friday, so the show was very timely. We got there just in time for the play. Lucky we weren’t late as there was a lockdown policy that night. It was my first time at the Lyric Theatre so that gave me another reason to get excited. Last time I went there it was under renovation so we were seated on block chairs. That night, we got a nice seat in the stalls area and not for long the show started.

My first impression… “Oh no… It’s not Adam Garcia…” and I thought I’d get bored. But when the flashback story started and the song and dance began, I was wrong. The energy and the infectious fun actually entertained me! I can’t believe we were laughing and having fun all through out the show. The actor who played Don Lockwood was amazing. I don’t mind him playing the role instead of Adam! J

I’ll share some of my favorite characters and scenes plus my personal reaction after I did some research after the show:

Cosmo Brown – Jack Chambers

This guy is so talented! He is totally the opposite of boring. Never had a dreary scene if he’s around. I really looked forward to when he would sing and dance. Then I learnt that he’s the first winner of the show “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2008! Wow! No wonder he was nominated to get a Helpmann Award.

Lina Lamont – Erika Heynatz

The moment she starts talking, I can’t help but laugh and be irritated at the same time. I don’t know how is it possible to do that but yes, I felt that way. I was wondering the whole night if that is her actual voice! Then when I saw her profile, I was mind blown. She was the actress in “Home & Away”!!! I really can’t believe it was her because I didn’t recognize her from where I was sitting. She had super blonde hair so it didn’t occur to me that it was her. She definitely deserves to be nominated to get a Helpmann Award along side Jack Chambers.

Kathy Selden – Gretel Scarlett, and Grant Almirall – Don Lockwood

As expected, their performance is spot on. I can’t think of any flaws that night as every song and move were executed perfectly. I personally loved Kathy Selden as her costumes fit her personality and her dance moves were marvelous, how I wish I can sing and dance like her.

As most of the scenes were outstanding, here are my personal favorites:

The choreography, the costume and the execution! It was superb!!!

I love the tongue twister scenes and how Cosmo mocks the teacher. It was a funny choreography too!

The mic in the bush! The fact that Lina was whispering and changing her tone when the microphone was out of range was so funny. I could see everyone’s frustration trying to make the scene perfect.

This is one of the best comedy scenes. Everyone was laughing hard. If you’ve watched it, you would definitely agree.. “Yes, yes, yes…. No, no, no”.

Aaahh, the first scene where it actually rained! This was so awesome. I was checking out the first few rows and found out that they are wearing ponchos! Apparently they’re provided. How cool is that?! They said that in order to achieve this famous scene, the productions uses over 800 metres of flexible pipe work, a 9000kh water tank and a water system that creates a downpour from above as well as flooding from below the stage, in total “raining” over 12,000 litres of recycled water per performance.

No words, just WOW!

At the end of the show, we claimed our “selfies” at the photobooth area! All you need is to post the photos in your public Instagram account and use #SINGINAU in your caption and it will be automatically printed. Cool eh? Got 3 copies that night, haha! It will also be posted on their website if you use the hashtag.
