Random Thoughts: University and Dormitory

In two week’s time, my cousin will graduate from Year 12 and will start University life soon. I can still remember my own high school graduation and start of College and how life has been through the years.

In most of the Western countries, it is usual that students who are taking their tertiary education leave home and start their independent lives. However, in other countries like the Philippines, it is rare that we move out with our parents just because of studying. It’s our culture to stay with the family up until one gets married. Yes, that’s how Filipinos are.
In my case, when I started Uni life, it is a need to stay somewhere near the University. Why? Well, the traffic in the Philippines is terrible that it will take me 2-3 hours to reach the school. So, my parents decided to look for some place safe for me to stay during the weekdays and will go back home on the weekends. It’s inevitable. I have to live in a dormitory!

My friends in high school were even surprised that I’m going to be on my own. Well, not technically though! I’ve been in the University’s hospital dormitory. It was called a dorm but it’s really a ward. Literally a hospital ward! Hahaha! That’s the closest and cheapest dorm we found and it’s within the vicinity of the University so it’s safe.

I’ve always made my stay in the dormitory comfortable. I brought something that will remind me of home. Food is definitely essential as well as study lamps and bed sheets. I remember I change my sheets almost every month so it feels and smells fresh. It is always best to have a warm blanket especially when it gets cold at night. As they say, having a good night sleep is very important to have a healthy life.

It’s been more than a decade since I graduated in College but I can stay up all night just to reminisce what I did back then.
I hope my cousin will enjoy every single day in the University and that goes for all graduates as well. May they learn important life’s lessons and cherish true friendship. I believe that what you’ll do in College/University will greatly affect your future endeavours. So make the most out of it.
