Advent Season 2011: HOPE

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” It is is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. This time of year we contemplate that hope embodied, enfleshed, incarnated, in a newborn baby, the perfect example of newness, potential, and possibility. During Advent, we groan and long for that newness with the hope, the expectation, indeed the faith, that God will once again be faithful to see our circumstances, to hear our cries, to know our longings for a better world and a whole life (Ex 3:7). And we hope that as he first came as an infant, so he will come again as King! – Christian Resource Institute

Filipinos start decorating their houses as early as September. However, most of us get caught up with life’s material and external things that we tend to forget what is really important. I think Advent was made for us to remember that Christmas is not only about gifts but also about ourselves. More importantly how we really prepare for the Lord’s coming. Every Sunday of Advent, a candle is lit to remind us what qualities we need to ready ourselves.

Yesterday was the first Sunday of the Advent Season. Thus, the first candle was lighted that symbolizes Hope. Hope, in dictionary term is a verb that means ” to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence“.

Here’s a beautiful video on Advent:

As we continue to prepare our hearts for the Lord’s coming, may we experience the joy of expectation and remember God’s loving nature.

Advent. Slow Down. Take Time. Open up.
