2009 Australia Day 6-9: Melbourne City Tour

2009-12-27~30

Since I haven’t been faithful to my word of blogging each and every adventure, I will just summarize it since I can’t remember all the details anymore. I want to finish this Australian Adventure blog for me to be inspired to blog my future travel. This for me is a good way to document my life’s adventures.

Anyway, from Canberra we are off to Melbourne by 9am. It was a long 6hr drive. We just had a stop to eat lunch and for CR break then after, we went straight to the City.

Since we only have limited time to explore all Melbourne’s wonders (including the best water parks in Melbourne), we just concentrated in our city tour. It was easy to tour around the city since there was a free tram service that will go around the city and you just have to drop off to the stations/streets you want to go around.

Here are the places we went to:

1. Melbourne CBD

We went to the famous Flinders Street train Station, which is right in front of the Federation Square (where I go at night because they have a free wifi there). The at the back of the square, you can see art works and kids stations. We also went to their shopping areas in Bourke St. and the DFO in Spencer St.

2. Docklands and Harbour Town

Here is the place to be if you want to do is shopping shopping shopping! hahaha. 🙂 We spent almost halfday here then ate lunch in the newly opened Costco. But you can also see some art works in the Docklands and the Etihad Stadium where Australian Football is being held. Also, on the way to Spencer St. you will find Melbourne’s Channel 7 building.

3. Parliament House

Unlike in Canberra, we didn’t get the change to go inside the Parliament house in Melbourne. I think it was closed or we just didn’t bother to go inside. As I’ve said that you can find lots of old building structures, and this is one of them.

4. St. Patrick’s Cathedral

At the back of the Parliament, you can walk towards the St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This was the only catholic church I saw in Melbourne. I guess, we didn’t look for some. Oh! I remember, there’s a small Catholic church at the back of the Hotel where we’re staying. We accidentally saw it when we head home from Spencer’s St. 🙂

5. Fitzroy Gardens

You can find exquisite flowers inside the Conservatory. We had fun taking pictures with so many different colored flowers. As you walk further, you will see the Cook’s Cottage.  I forgot the history of that and we didn’t went inside since there was a $5 fee? We just explored what’s inside through the window. Haha! :p

6. Sports Precinct

Last but not the least, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) where the famous sports of Australia is held and the Rod Laver Arena where the Australian Open will be held. Too bad it was closed when we visited. I didn’t get the chance to buy my friend some merchandise of AU Open.

That’s it. I guess we did a great job discovering Melbourne. 🙂
