As you’ve noticed in my recent posts, I’ve been doing some running here in Sydney. I never ran more than 3k before I moved here. Well, I wanted to but the venue is far from where I live in Manila and it usually starts at 5:00am! Because of that, I can’t be bothered to wake up and do some running. So what made me decide on doing this stressful thing? Well, it’s more on motivation to have a healthy lifestyle. Also, running events in Sydney starts between 8-9:00am. Not too early and you always get a complimentary ride to the venue. 🙂
I always wanted to enrol in a regular gym class to stay “fit”. However, due to time and other reasons, I never get the chance to do something that will improve my lifestyle. A few months after I landed in Sydney, I couldn’t believe I ran 14k already. That’s a big milestone for me. I tell you, it’s not easy especially for someone who is not fit for the event. Hahaha!
I train a bit before the said event. The first time I went out and run at the park, I failed. I think I pushed myself too hard on the first try. I got muscle pain, lower back pain and difficulty in breathing too! It was not a good sign. I can’t even keep up with the other runners in the park. The second time, I learned my lesson. I started warming up doing some stretches before my endurance test. Well actually, I only jogged and brisk walked that time to give my body a chance to recover. True enough, I had the energy to finish a 3k jog/walk. My routine progresses as time goes by and somehow I knew how to pace myself.
On the day of a race event, I see myself nervous and scared. I still am not sure what could happened on the race day. Of course I take pre-cautionary measures and be aware of my surroundings. It’s just the thought that I might not be able to make it to the finish line scares me. Luckily, I manage to finish it without any impairment.
I can see myself doing a number of runs in the future and hopefully it will be a permanent thing for me. I want to discipline myself not to rely on running events to make running a regular thing. It’s just hard to start again if you stop doing it for a long time. It would be painful both emotionally and physically. Well at least physically you can take some Aspirin to ease the pain. The pain of not being true to your word would probably hurt more.
So new runners out there, make sure to stick to your routine and improve gradually. Make sure you have enough liquids in your system before running. Don’t forget to do a lot of stretching and warming up to lessen injury. Have fun and just enjoy yourself out there.
Happy Running!
