Recently, I’ve been watching a number of Filipino family drama series and most of them dealt with inheritance. It’s quite a topic for some, especially if you’re waiting for one.
I’m not sure how you actually acquire your so-called “assets” but based from these “teleseryes” (Filipino term for television series), it usually starts with someone who died and the execution of the will. If you’re watching one, you’ll probably know what will happen next.
The drama starts the moment the siblings and relatives get hold of the will. The acquisition of estates is the turning point where all the actors starts to get greedy and wants to get all what is due to them.
I get to wonder, if I’m one of these people, who should I trust? To whom should I entrust whatever I’m entitled for. At this point of my life, I’m not even sure what to do next.
If I were still in the Philippines, I probably would know who to ask since I got lawyer friends. However, I am in Australia right now and the probate law in Sydney and the Philippines might be different from one another. It might be similar but it’s still best to ask for legal advice from someone who is expert on the field.
Is it really mandatory to have a will? I personally am still awed how a lot of people get in distress when it comes to talking about inheritance. Maybe this is a must for rich people? Or should this be a concern for ALL regardless of life’s status?
In my personal opinion, it’s still best to use your money while you’re still alive and build memories with loved ones. If life didn’t go well as planned, we should always have a back up plan. It’s not necessarily have to be a big amount of money or a couple of estates and the like, but at least create a “will” for those you left behind? Maybe that’s how it should go? Or maybe just be contented on what you have and not rely much on what you’ll get in case your parents or whoever died and you’ll get a percentage of their estate. Hhhmm, or better yet, just donate to the Church or to the less fortunate?
I can have a long list of arguments on this topic but I need to stop. I just want to let it out. How about you? What’s your take on inheritance or even just the “Last Will”?
